GERARD JOHN: COMPOSER, SINGER, PERFORMER, ACTOR, PRODUCER
EARLY LIFE: Indian born, third generation entertainer, Gerard John spent the first 8 years of his life, immersed in a melting pot of Music and Cinema ranging from Classic Bollywood, Hollywood, BBC 1, TOP of the POPS, American top 40 and Radio Luxemburg.
Even before he was born, Gerard was in the recording studio (in utero) whilst his mother Susheela, recorded vocals for a movie soundtrack as a Bollywood playback singer. By the age of 3, Gerard would sit in on his mother’s orchestra rehearsals, keeping perfect time, tapping complex rhythms to (Carnatic, North Indian Classical, Western Classical and Pop) music; which was transposed by his father Dr Manikam Francis John. At 5 years old Gerard began singing before audiences.
John's family immigrated to Australia when he was 8 years old where he continued his passion for music, performing in teenage bands as a singer, drummer and percussionist. Formal studies included private tutelage by Indian Pandits in Carnatic and Hindustani classical raga systems, both in voice and percussion. Also Western Classical composition, piano, percussion and programming. Gerard's operatic, 4+ octave range voice has been developed by Dr Robert Mitchell , Ellie Rab and Steve Ostrow who also discovered Bette Midler and Barry Manilow.
Acting studies include "method acting" under the tutelage of Dame Zika Nester (OBE of Ensemble Theatre Sydney) and voice coaching with Felicity Jurd
DISCOGRAPHY: In 1995 Gerard and his younger brother Philip teamed up to form Indian pop duo Phil and Jerry, bursting on to the Indian Desi music scene with the international #1 Hindi hit Q-Funk
Their overnight success included hit songs and albums such as Oorja and the soundtrack for the Tamil film Thotta Chinungi
The duo were later known as Twice John during their 10 year collaboration from 1995-2005.
With a multi lingual discography including over 20 million units in sales in English, Hindi, Tamil, Punjabi, Mandarin, Cantonese, Malayalam, Ga, Italian and Spanish, Gerard John’s body of work includes over 110 pieces ranging from TV Commercials to UK soul and dance chart collaborations , to inflight entertainment and multi award winning film score.
FILM: in 2015 Gerard debuted as actor and producer in the bilingual English - Italian short film "Tendency to Love" (Tendenza Ad Amar)
Filmed in Italy, UK and Australia, the movie is a FLYING KITE STUDIOS production in association with the American School of Milan
Playing lead actor, Gerard portrayed an English Doctor troubled with the complexities of love. Gerard also composed the original film score, the title track and co-produced the movie with Jennifer Rose and Paul Rickwood alongside cinematographer Edd Lukas
Between 2017 and 2018 Gerard John has received multiple Global independent film Awards for the film Tendency to Love including leading actor, best original score, best title song, best production and the movie has also won additional awards including best screenplay and editing.
